Visited the glaciar on 11th June, 2018. Portage glacier in Alaska is situated near the Chaguch forest and we had to take a cruise to reach here . It was fascinating to see and admire this glacier which was formed around the Ice age. The ice age starts about two and a half millions years earlier and ended about eleven thousand seven hundred years. During this period the earth was covered with glaciers. I learnt some thing new today when we were informed in the ferry that we should remember the formula 10x10x1. We were told that it takes ten years for ten meters of ice to be converted into one square feet of a glacier. Remembering these statistics the spread before us was awe inspiring. This took me back into prehistory and I could only imagine how much time, effort and the amount of ice it must have taken for this glacier to be formed. I had only read and heard about climate change and our glaciers melting but today, I confronted this reality face to face and saw this in front of me. There were pictures of the Portage glacier from 1914 to present and we could see how the glacier was reducing day by day and the ice cover shrinking. The glacier sight was breathtaking and awesome. One could look at the vast panorama in front of us and marvel at the majestic mountains and their importance in our planet. Indeed a humbling sight and one that makes us acknowledge the debt to our planet and our responsibilities in trying to preserve it.
